Anarchism is the theory and practice of building a society free from rulership, domination, and constraints on personal and intersubjcetive agency.
The culture and infrastructure of our rigid, cancerous, and sedentary civilization is rotten to the core, but 'technology' is not one monolithic thing. Collapse is neither inevitable nor desirable, and the root causes responsible for technological development--our creativity and inquiry--are both inextricably tied to liberation.

Sexual assault and abuse continue to plague anarchist scenes. This essay examines the context in which community accountability models emerged and analyzes the pitfalls we’ve encountered in trying to apply them. To move beyond the impasse around sexual violence within our scenes, we’ll need to challenge the idea of community itself and take our resistance in new directions.

The desire to change the world remains merely an abstract ideal or a political program unless it becomes the will to transform one’s own life. If joy and wonder, and a beautiful, indomitable existence are what we want, we need to try to achieve this here and now in rebellious defiance against all domination, eradicating the logic of submission from our lives, and our relationships and our revolutionary struggle - for the destruction of politics and the creation of life without measure.

A revolution capable of destroying all domination and eploitation will have to be based on the self-organized struggle of those who suffer domination and exploitation. We are among these exploited an dispossessed individuals, but as anarchists we come to the struggle with more than the need for an immediate improcement of conditions. We also have specific ideas about how the present world functions and desires an reams of a fundamentally different worl. Thus our participation is an intervention aimed towards the revolutionary destruction of this social order and the creation of a new world based precisely on principles of self-organization.

The aim of this pamphlet is to do nothing more than present an outline of what the author thinks are the key features of Mikhail Bakunin's anarchist ideas. Bakunin was extremely influential in the 19th century socialist move- ment, yet his ideas for decades have been reviled, distorted or ignored. On reading this pamphlet, it will become apparent that Bakunin has a lot to offer and that his ideas are not at all confused (as some writers would have us think) but make up a full coherent and well argued body of thought.

Alston, who was a member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, describes his encounter(s) with anarchism (which began while he was incarcerated for activities related to the Black Liberation Army). COINTELPRO was the FBI's secret program to undermine the popular upsurge which swept the country during the 1960s. Though the name stands for 'Counterintelligence Program,' the targets were not enemy spies. The FBI set out to eliminate 'radical' political opposition inside the US. When traditional modes of repression (exposure, blatant harassment, and prosecution for political crimes) failed to counter the growing insurgency, and even helped to fuel it, the Bureau took the law into its own hands and secretly used fraud and force to sabotage constutionally prorected political activity.

From the very start the Western media has grossly misrepresented these uprisings. The uprising in the South, centred on Basra, was portrayed as a Shia Muslim revolt. Whereas the insurrection in the North was reported as an exclusively Kurdish Nationalist uprising which demanded little more than an autonomous Kurdish region within Iraq. The truth is that the uprisings in both the North and South of Iraq were proletarian insurrections.

Essentialism is the idea that there exists some detectible and objective core quality of particular groups of people that is inherent, eternal, and unalterable; groupings can be categorized according to these qualities of essence, which are based on such problematic criteria as gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, and class. Racism, sexism, classism, and most other forms of historical oppression are ideologies and policies maintained and justiÀed by essentialism.

To its credit, the women’s movements have raised the issue of women’s revolt in terms other than class-struggle ones, class struggle the only historical driving force seen by the Marxists, who have clarified the economic exploitation of women not paid for housework and child-rearing but have not challenged the reproduction of the power male workers wield compared to women workers. Capitalism has an ideological need of this form of social organisation.

Everywhere, anarchism is on the upswing as a political philosophy--everywhere, that is, except the academy. Anarchists repeatedly appeal to anthropologists for ideas about how society might be reorganized on a more egalitarian, less alienating basis. Anthropologists, terrified of being accused of romanticism, by and large respond with silence... But what if they didn't? In this classic piece, David Graeber explores the implications of linking anthropology to anarchism, and sketches the beginnings of a new field.

The articles in this pamphlet are all translations of articles originally written in German by the communist group Wildcat and deal with various aspects of the “War on Terror”. Despite the sometimes mediocre translations they are well worth making the effort to read because they are some of the best articles about capitalism’s current war spree available. The essence of the argument that runs through all these articles is that the capitalist world order is in crisis and in desperation the response is war, first against Afghanistan and then Iraq. The “War on Terror” is thus an expression of capitalist weakness not strength.

The unemployed Bengali and the Irish call center worker experience a dispossession and a domination that are basically similar, though never addressed in what they have in common. The September 11, 2001 attack and the ensuing counter-offensive set these two proletarians even further away from each other.

On the Finer Points of the Recent Revolt in Ferguson, MO: the St. Louis area has a history of police being shot at, and police are very aware of that. The police know people are armed and willing to shoot. From the beginning of the uprising, rebels made this very clear: one of the first things to happen after they killed Mike Brown was shots being fired into the air.

It is the accumulation of 'petty' acts of defiance and refusal that make critical upsurges possible. They are not a substitute for revolution but a necessary condition for it. That is why the insurrectionary moment invariably escalates so rapidly - 'as if from nowhere' - and is why revolutionary elites (the clownish ringmasters of the vanguard) always find themselves hopelessly overtaken.

The apocalypse began with the advent of our current form of life based on industrial production. It is easy to assume that there is no alternative to this form of life, that the way we live in this present moment is simply a reflection of the way things are.
In times of crisis, a space of freedom returns, and the possibility of a rupture with the present opens. History, long banished to dreary scholastic books, returns to us fresh and alive. To push away that which is closest to us, our very form of life, and see it objectively – this might seem impossible. Yet it is not: the first step is to give our form of life a name, to identify it as something finite in time and space, so capable of ending. This perpetual present that has its only favor being the certainty of its own destruction has a name: capitalism

Documents from Chicago's Clandestine Abortion Service 1968-1973. This collection may not only to be viewed in terms of abortion rights, or even strictly in terms of the quest for women to have control over their bodies, but also in terms of any group of people face-up against the onslaught of modern-day slavery (in all its forms) taking control over their lives. Jane is an inspiration— a beautiful example that battles can be won without begging. Today they can be seen as a bold display of an effective underground organization operating with utter disregard for the letter of the law— women taking their lives into their own hands and taking responsibility for their actions, all the while without asking for anyone’s permission.

There comes a time when an individual must look eep within the heart to find moral and ethical answers to life. If one refuses to challenge their own morals during the course of a lifetime, learning in its truest sense ceases to exist. We believe that only when actions are anonymous can they really be appropriated by everyone. We believe that putting a stamp on an attack is moving the attack from the social to the political field, to the field of representation, delegation, actors and spectators. And, as has often been said before in this kind of debate, it’s not enough to proclaim the refusal of politics: its refusal implicates coherence between means and aims, and the claim is a political instrument just like the membership card, the program, the declaration of principles.

Seeing racism as a separate, secondary issue is an old problem in the U.S. peace movement, which does not al- ways realize that it must be anti-racist as well as anti-war. Today, with the ‘Permanent War’ becoming all too perma- nent, that realization is all the more crucial. Do people really think the expanding U.S. empire will be stopped by white folks alone?

The SI [Situationist International] must be counted as a basic reference point for any future revolutionary movement. The SIʼs powerful critique of the revolutionary herself may have degenerated in the period of counter-revolution into a dead-end addiction to navel-gazing; but this cannot obscure the continued necessity of engaging with their arguments. Despite the attention the SI receives, and the attempts over the years by various toss-pots to claim them for modern art or cultural studies, the SI remains in some sense irrecuperable.

Why We Not Just Want It But Need It. The freedom to modify one's body is essential not just to transhumanism, but also to any liberatory society. Without understanding and a say in our own bodies, we are prisoners in them. Consistent radicals reject arbitrary lines between 'enhancement' and 'treatment': there is no objectively ideal body or single direction of progress, rather what matters most is choice and possibilities.

Anarchist opposition to war is not a pacifist refusal of violence. Rather it is a refusal of militarism-of that system of social relationships founded on hierarchy, obedience, the dismantling of the individual, the quantified perception of the other that allows for indiscriminate killing and the description of those killed as a body count.

When Guy Debord of the Situationist International graffitied the slogan 'Never Work!' onto the walls of a Parisian street in 1953, he struck a blow in solidarity with the radical current of left communism which locates the wage-labour relation as the central pillar of capitalist relations and therefore the prime lo- cus of attack. It is, of course, a banality that we need to work in order to produce for our basic needs. But what is at question here is the naure of that work, for whom, andto what end? Useful work? Or useless toil?

In March 1994, the French government wanted to give its tender young wage slaves a 20% pay cut. The State must have figured it would be good training for their future careers as exploited human capital. But a funny thing happened on the way to the bank: those vulnerable young workers stood up and told the State to royally (or rather democratically) fuck off. It took a month of demos, protests, and riots, becoming ever bigger, more violent, and out of control, for the government to finally back down.

It's one thing to 'organize,' it's another to form an organization. For over a decade, post-leftists have criticized the organization in unflinching terms. The response has been muted. Everyone knows organizations are problematic, but nowhere are the terms clear. Everyone carries within themselves the germs of this lust for power, and every germ, as we know, because of a basic law of life, necessarily must develop and grow, if only it finds in its environment favourable conditions. These con- ditions in human society are the stupidity, igno- rance, apathy, indifference, and servile habits of the masses - so one may say justly that it is the masses themselves that produce those exploiters, oppressors, despots and executioners of humanity, of whom they are the victims.

Kropotkin nowhere so clearly described the evils of the prison sys- tem. It has not been done better by any writer in so brief a com- pass. It does not require an anarchist philosopher to point them out, and save in discussing the remedy he makes no contributions peculiar to anarchist thought. But his remedy is revolutionary, and his indictment is necessary to give it point. Abolish the prisons and treat all offenders as brothers, applying to them where necessary all that medical sci- ence and modern psychology offer to cure anti-social conduct.

Usually racism is the best tool of the prison officials to control volatile prison populations. The warden and his guards intentionally keep up racial hostilities through rumors and provocation, and. use the racist white prisoners to confine both themselves and others, in return for special privileges and the fleeting feeling that they are ‘helping’ the ‘white race’ maintain control. This is how the system imprisons whites and uses them in their own oppression.

Solidarity lies in action. Action that sinks its roots in one’s own project that is carried on coherently and proudly too, especially in times when it might be dangerous even to express one’s ideas publicly. A project that expresses solidarity with joy in the game of life that above all makes us free ourselves, destroys alienation, exploitation, mental poverty, opening up infinite spaces devoted to experimentation and the continual activity of one’s mind in a project aimed at realising itself in insurrection.

The fact that arms were brought out so quickly in response to the Stalinist provocation says a lot for the Catalonian massesʼ immense capacities for autonomy; but the fact that the order to surrender issued by the anarchist ministers was so quickly obeyed demonstrates how much autonomy for victory they still lacked. Tomorrow again it will be the workersʼ degree of autonomy that will decide our fate.

Self-emancipation in our time is emancipation from the material bases of an inverted truth. This 'historic mission to establish truth in the world' can be carried out neither by the isolated individual nor by atomized and manipulated masses, but — only and always — by that class which is able to effect the dissolution of all classes, subjecting all power to the disalienating form of a realized democracy — to councils in which practical theory exercises control over itself and surveys its own action. It cannot be carried out, in other words, until individuals are 'directly bound to universal history'; until dialogue has taken up arms to impose its own conditions upon the world.

The youth are waiting, day after day. They wait for their time; as do the workers, even the old. They all ways, those who are discontented and who reflect. They are waiting for a force to arise, something they will be part of; a kind of new international that will not make the same mistakes as the previous ones. They wait for a chance to get rid of the past once and for all--for something new to begin. We have begun.

The goal of any insurrection is to become irreversible. It becomes irreversible when you’ve defeated both authority and the need for authority, property and the taste for appropriation, hegemony and the desire for hegemony. That is why the insurrectionary process carries within itself the form of its victory, or that of its defeat. Destruction has never been enough to make things irreversible.

The proletariat’s assault on the citadels of capital only has a chance of success on condition that the proletarian revolutionary movement finishes with democracy once and for all. Democracy is the last refuge of all disavowals and betrayals, because it is the first hope of those who believe in purifying and re-invigorating the current movement which is rotten to its core.

The Housing Monster takes one seemingly simple everyday thing—a house—and looks at the social relations that surround and determine it. Starting with the construction site and the physical building of houses, the book slowly builds and links more and more issues together: from gentri cation and city politics to gender roles and identity politics, from subcontracting and speculation to union contracts and negotiation, from intensely personal thoughts and interactions to large-scale political and economic forces. What starts as a look at housing questions, broadens into a critique of capitalism as a whole. The text is accompanied by clean black and white illustrations that are mocking, beautiful, and bleak.

What is violence? Who gets to define it? Does it have a place in the pursuit of liberation? These age-old questions have returned to the fore during the Occupy movement. But this discussion never takes place on a level playing field; while some delegitimize violence, the language of legitimacy itself paves the way for the authorities to employ it.

Instead of engaging in the usual moralistic leftist critique of capitalism, this pamphlet tackles the subject head on, on its own turf--economics--and demolishes the common belief that 'capitalism delivers the goods.' Brian Sheppard does this through close consideration of 10 of the most outstanding inefficiencies of capitalism--things such as manufacture of false desires, product duplication, waste of unsold goods, and the inefficiency of hierarchies. Through this analysis, Sheppard shows that, given the labor and resources at hand, capitalism is a horribly wasteful system tha tproduces a piticully small amount of useful goods and services.

Warfare has significantly changed in the last thirty years. From 1945 until about 1975 most wars were part of the worldwide movement of decolonisation that saw the formation of dozens of new states in Africa and Asia. Since then most wars have been civil wars within the decolonised countries, sometimes continuing directly from the national liberation war as competing factions fought over the prize of the new state as in Angola. While these wars all have their own proximate causes rooted in particular histories certain similarities can be discerned. These essays examine those similarities

In this classic, thoroughly documented pamphlet, the late Sam Dolgoff, lifelong anarchist activist, convincing- ly demonstrates the relevance of the classical anarchist tradition if the face of bourgeois neo-Anarchism, distor- tions by historians, and social complexity, administrative problems, and technological advance. It doubles as a discussion of Anarchist principles, revolutionary pre- conditions, and the problems of post-revolutionary reconstruction and re-organisation.

Building upon the federalist and libertarian socialist ideas of his friend Pierre- Joseph Proudhon as well as those in the European labour movement, Bakunin shaped anarchism into its modern form. His revolutionary, class struggle based anarchism soon became the dominant form of anarchism in the First International. He combated the state socialism of Marx and Engels and laid the foundations for both communist-anarchism and anarcho-syndicalism. His predictions about Marxism have been confirmed and his critique of capitalism, the state and religion are just as valid as when they were first expounded. Both the Russian and Spanish revolutions have confirmed the power of his ideas on revolution.

Following the police killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropolous in downtown Athens, Greece was wracked by weeks of unprecedented rioting. Anarchists and students, supported and often joined by significant swaths of the population, clashed with police, destroyed corporate and government property and occupied government buildings, trade union offices, and media outlets, not to mention universities. This zine contains a timeline, an analysis, and an interview with participants of the riot.

The following pamphlet is a short introduction to the Spanish revolution of 1936-39. However, to do this it has been necessary to give a brief account of the history of the Spanish labour movement before and after the revolution. Although a large number of books and articles have been written on the history of Spanish anarchism and the revolution, there are no cheap pamphlets available on the subject and it seemed appropriate to publish this work on the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the revolution - 1986 - to remedy this situation.

Rebellion at the Convict Lease in Tennessee's coalfields, 1891-1895. Something happened in Tennessee, something almost unimaginable to the mine owners and politicians of that state. When the companies tried to intimidate their workers by bringing in convict labor to take over their jobs, the workers responded by storming the stockades, freeing the prison- ers, and loading them onto freight trains bound for Nash- ville and Knoxville and places far away...The Tennessee convict war was one of the largest insurrections in American working-class history. And yet, unfolding at exactly the same time as the more publicized labor wars in Homestead, Pennsylvania, and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, it was largely ignored.

A history of radical Minnesota. Substantive, radical change is only accomplished with a firm understanding of the past, and it is with this in mind that the RNC Welcoming Committee has labored to produce this text. Minnesota has a rich history of radical struggle and, as history does, it informs our movement today. We have powerful examples of the tenacity of the human spirit- in the land we love, and amongst the people we live with and those who came before- and this zine is meant to educate people about that heritage.

Radical Ideas on the Treatment of Children. When you told your parents you hated school, what they sai was valid: 'that's how life is, deal with it'. The problem is that when they tell you that, they don't want you to change things, they want you to just 'take it.' High school is preparation for the rest of your life, so we must start here. Start at the root. They are teaching you to stand in line, to do worthless work, and to know only what you need to know to work for hte system. We are the next wage slaves and just as some day they must break their chains, so must we. This zine is not to be taken lightly. You can't just hate school because it's hard, you must abolish it because it destroys the natural curiosity of a child.
In this year we commemorated the uprising of the Spanish people against the Fascist powers, who, in collaboration with the Catholic Church and the military, were preparing the overthrow of the Spanish republic in 1936. This pamphlet deals with the resistance by the independent labour movement led by the CNT-FAI and with the attacks directed against them by, among others, Stalinists, which eventually led to Franco’s army seizing power.

Revolutionary thinkers have been saying that the age of vanguardism is over for most of a century now. Outside of a handful of tiny sectarian groups, it's almost impossible to find a radical intellectuals seriously believe that their role should be to determine the correct historical analysis of the world situation, so as to lead the masses along in the one true revolutionary direction.

Born into poverty and plagued by it her entire life, educated by nuns in a convent school, chronically ill, the survivor of a nearly successful assassination attempt, and dead at a tragically early age, Voltairine de Cleyre doesn't seem a likely candidate to become what Paul Avrich called 'a greater literary talent than any other American anarchist.' But de Cleyre was undeniably one of the most important anarchist thinkers in the US or any other country. Greatly admired by her contemporaries for her brilliant writing and tireless schedule of public speaking, her ability to approach the most complex issues with a mixture of common sense, passion, and clarity makes her works as relevant today as they were a century ago.

e moral and political signi cance of thought only appears in those rare moments of history where 'Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world;; where 'The best lack all conviction, while the worst / Are full of passionate intensity;. In these crucial moments, thought ceases to be a marginal a air to political questions. Radical health reform from the bottom up. The healthcare system, upon which people in Ireland depend, is an apartheid system. Simply put, some lives are worth more than others. Rare attempts at reform have been stymied by historic, chronic underspending and vested interests. This legacy has forced the vast majority of working people to take out private health insurance and has laid the foundations for a neo-liberal push towards an American-style system of private, for-pro t medicine.

Feminism, Anarchism, and Organization. The unstructured group has an important role to play in building for change. But at times it can be dominated by informal structures and elites, and it is often prone to internal arguments and insularity. How far, then, should the leaderless principles be taken?

Imagine insurrection being an immediate break from the lives we were told we were supposed to have. Imagine that insurrection is an opportunity for such a break to become permanent. The state wants us to play politics, the economy wants us to play the game of survival; our lives are not games, we need to stop playing now.

The question is not: who has the guns? but rather: what do the people with the guns do? 10,000 or 100,000 proletarians armed to the teeth are nothing if they place their trust in anything beside their own power to change the world. Otherwise, the next day, the next month or the next year, the power whose authority they recognize will take away the guns which they failed to use against it.

Work eats up our lives. It dominates every aspect of our existence. When weʼre not at the job weʼre travelling to or from it, preparing or recovering from it, trying to forget about it or attempting to escape from it in what is laughably called our ʻleisureʼ time. Work is a truly offensive four-letter word.

In this pamphlet, Chaz Bufe looks closely at the common belief that the United States is a 'free country,' comparing rhetoric with reality. He considers common conceptions of freedom, why so few 'freedom loving Americans' actually have any understanding of freeom, and why so few have any respect for it. Bufe traces this lack of understanding and lack of respect to the various American institutions of the public. He concludes by examining the nature of freedom, especially aspects of it which are never mentioned in 'the miseducation system' or the corporate media.
